Panda Bamboo supplies a large range of solid and strand-woven bamboo boards and panels, bamboo flooring and rustic bamboo screens, panels and poles. See our Gallery section for some pictures of our products in various applications.

Bamboo Boards and Panels

Our solid bamboo boards are used to make counter  and work tops (for kitchens, bars, restaurants etc.), cupboard doors, panelling and furniture. The boards are 2.44m long, and come in standard widths of 620mm, 900mm and 1220mm. Various thicknesses are available. Non-standard sizes can also be ordered.

All of these boards and panels are made from strips of bamboo approximately 20mm wide and 5 mm thick which are laminated together to make up solid bamboo boards and panels of various sizes. The direction in which the individual pieces are laid determines the grain pattern of the end product. With the strips laid horizontally the nodes are more prominent, with a finer grain structure between the nodes. If the strips are laid vertically the finished board exhibits a stronger, more linear grain effect, with the individual nodes being less prominent.

In addition to the two different layering methods, all solid (laminated) bamboo products come in two basic colour variants. In its natural state, without further treatment or colouring, the bamboo boards have a light, "blonde" colour, similar to a light pine wood. However, if the bamboo pieces are heat-treated (carbonised) prior to forming them into boards and panels, their colour changes to a mid-brown, similar to old oak wood.

Thus all of our solid bamboo products are available in four basic variations:  Horizontal layering Vertical layering

Natural "Blonde"

Carbonised Mid-brown

Strand-woven bamboo boards are not actually woven, but are made by compressing the dried bamboo strips and reconstituting them with a special glue, under very high pressure. The resulting product is 60% more dense and twice as hard as natural bamboo! Strand-woven bamboo boards are available in the natural and caramel (carbonized) colours, but the colours are darker than the solid (laminated) bamboo. Strand-woven bamboo has a wavy, irregular grain pattern, more like conventional timber. Strand-woven boards are supplied in  1.85m lengths.

Normal wood stains, varnishes or other coatings can be applied to both the solid and strand-woven bamboo boards and panels, to create many different colours and effects. Bamboo boards and panels can also easily be cut, joined and machined like conventional timber.

Flooring

We supply 2 different types of bamboo flooring:

- solid bamboo flooring

- strand-woven bamboo flooring

Both types of flooring are supplied as tongue and groove planks (end matched), 96mm in width. The floorboards can be nailed onto battens or joists, glued to a cement screed floor using special glue systems, or installed as a floating floor using a self-adhesive rubber underlay. The finished floor has a micro V-groove between the planks (a characteristic of tongue & groove boards).

The strand-woven is more expensive than the solid bamboo flooring, but is very much harder and more water resistant than the solid bamboo flooring. It is also darker in colour (the natural bamboo becomes a golden colour, while the caramel colour becomes a darker brown), with a less regular, "softer" grain pattern.

Both types of flooring come pre-finished (7 coat German aluminium oxide polyurethane coating) and ready to install. Once installed no further coating is required. As with any solid wood floor, all bamboo floors can be sanded down and re-finished if the floor is subject to excessive wear or becomes scratched or damaged over the years.
