Panda Bamboo supplies a wide range of solid bamboo boards and panels, bamboo flooring, decking, cladding, and other bamboo products. There are two main methods of manufacturing these bamboo boards and panels, although both methods start with thin strips cut from the bamboo poles (or culms).
Laminated bamboo – the individual bamboo strips are accurately machined, and then laminated (glued) together into boards and panels. The individual strips making up the panels are visible in regular, geometric patterns in the finished board. If the bamboo strips making up the face of the board are laid flat (horizontally), one sees the wider strips and more visible nodes on the face of the board. We call this Horizontal layering or grain pattern. If the strips are laid vertically, with their long sides together, one sees narrower strips with less visible nodes on the face of the board. We call this Vertical layering (grain pattern).
Strandwoven bamboo – The name is a bit misleading, as no weaving as such, is done. The individual bamboo strips are partially crushed, coated with special glues, and then layers of these crushed strips are compressed under great pressure, forming bamboo boards of greater density and hardness than laminated bamboo. The strandwoven bamboo boards also differ from laminated bamboo boards in that they have a more “wavy”, less regular grain pattern. The appearance of these strandwoven bamboo products is similar to timber planks.
Both Laminated Bamboo and Strandwoven Bamboo are available in two basic colours, Natural – a blonde colour similar to pine, and Caramel (or Carbonised) – a mid brown colour similar to oak. The strandwoven bamboo is darker in colour than the laminated bamboo, due to the glues used. Both types can be stained to a darker colour, if so desired.
Our bamboo flooring, boards and panels are thus available in the six basic variations shown in the adjacent illustration.
